it is called also ‘batalay’ in the batangas area. in cuyunon, the ‘balo’ is the smaller variety that has a shorter beak, while the ‘subingan’ is larger and with a proportionately longer beak. however, very few now distinguish them accurately, calling all large needlefish ‘subingan’ and small ones ‘balo’.
